Prospective Substitutes

What are the steps in the hiring process?

Our hiring process is almost completely online and can be completed, start to finish, in less than one week!

1. Complete an online application by clicking on the Substitutes tab, then Apply Now. Select the appropriate application link.
2. Once your application is submitted, our Onboarding team will reach out to conduct a short phone interview.
3. We will then send instructions to complete online paperwork, mandatory professional development videos, and submit names for a reference check, if needed. We will also run a criminal background check for all candidates, paid for by TOC.
4. Once above steps are successfully completed, we will need you to complete one final government-required form in person with our office or one of our partners.
5. Start substituting! We will provide you with orientation resources as well as access to our Absence Management system so you can start viewing and accepting assignments.

How do I log back in to an application that I started in the past?

You can log into a previously started application by going to Substitutes > Apply Now and then selecting the application type that you had started in the past. Click 'Sign In' in the top right and enter in the login information that you originally created. If you need login assistance, select the 'Forgot username' or 'Forgot password' link, or contact the Teachers On Call office.

If I was a previous substitute with Teachers On Call, do I need to reapply to sub again?

If you had worked with Teachers On Call in the past, you do not need to complete a new application. Just contact our office and we will work with you to get your employment status updated.

If I have previously been employed with a school district that is transitioning to Teachers On Call, do I have to complete the entire application process?

We have an expedited hiring process just for candidates who were previously employed with our partner school districts to make the transition as seamless as possible. However, because we are a different company and must follow the appropriate privacy and hiring laws, there are some pieces that we need all prospective substitutes to complete - such as an application, government-issued paperwork, and possible trainings.

Do you hire year-round?

Yes! Our greatest need for substitutes is throughout the traditional school year, when we do the majority of our hiring. Anyone who applies during the summer months will be ready to sub when school starts up again in the fall!

Which districts do Teachers On Call partner with?

We currently work with over 150 public school districts and 200 charter or private schools across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. We have a large presence in both metropolitan areas as well as rural communities. Contact our office to see if we partner with schools in your area!

Do I need a teaching license to become a substitute?

Nope! It's not a requirement to already have a teaching license in order to be a substitute. We offer both licensed and un-licensed work, with some positions requiring a minimum of a high school diploma. We do offer guidance on obtaining a substitute teaching license for anyone interested in obtaining one to become a substitute teacher. No education degree is needed!

Do substitutes report to the district or to Teachers On Call?

All substitutes are formally employed by Teachers On Call; substitutes report to, communicate directly with, and are paid by TOC. However, when at a school, substitutes are expected to take direction from the on-site district staff.

Can I work with other schools, districts, or companies even if I am employed with TOC?

What if a district wants to hire me?

That's great! We enjoy introducing new talented substitutes to our schools. Teachers On Call employees are not under contract and are eligible for hire at any time. Please contact us when hired so we can assist with the transition process.

Does Teachers On Call require me to work a certain number of days or hours?

We pride ourselves on offering flexible opportunities for our substitutes, so we do not require a regular hourly or daily commitment. However, you must work at least one shift every 150 days to remain an active substitute in our system.

What type of benefits does Teachers On Call offer?

There are many advantages and benefits available to you as a Teachers On Call substitute. We offer our substitutes weekly pay, bonuses and incentives, online and in-person professional development opportunities, an employee assistance program, a 401(K) option, and insurance options for those who qualify. More detailed information will be provided upon hire.

How much are Teachers On Call substitutes paid?

We pay our substitutes what our districts would pay. Pay rates vary based on district and position type and substitutes are paid weekly for the previous week's work.
